Higher Taxes, Higher Ground

From TAPPED, more on that Alabama tax bill and the backing it got from evangelical Christians. Now, this is more of what Democrats need to do - engage people on their terms.
By now, most people have heard about how the conservative governor of Alabama is backing a tax hike in the statewide referendum scheduled for Sept. 9. Today at TAP Online, Francis Wilkinson reports from Montgomery, Ala., on the backstory behind that referendum — how a divinity student argued in her thesis that evangelical Christians have a duty to support higher taxes; how a number of extremely conservative intellectuals and politicians bought into her argument; and how the tax proposal that grew out of this debate is forcing plenty of conservative Christians in Alabama to rethink their place on the political spectrum.
They also have some good stuff on Wesley Clark:
This New York Times article makes it look like Wesley Clark is almost certainly going to run, which jibes with what Tapped’s been hearing around Washington. If you’re interested in knowing more about Clark, here are a few things to read. Start with Michael Tomasky’s excellent Clark profile from the Prospect. For a more extensive understanding of how Clark views America’s role in the world, read this article he wrote for The Washington Monthly; it lays the groundwork for a smart, pragmatic defense of multilateralism (one the other Democrats have not been able to make). Finally, if you’re wondering whether Clark could really win the nomination at this point, we’d urge you to examine this article by Amy Sullivan.Hear that tinkling? It’s the sound of Karl Rove wetting his pants.
