WHAT I’M LISTENING TO: “Shine,” Safe In Sound, Jim Boggia, Bluhammock Records.
If you’re a longtime reader, you know I’m a huge fan of Philadelphia powerpopster Jim Boggia. If you have a really good memory, you may also remember me raving last year about L.A. performer Julian Coryell, whose style I compared favorably to Boggia after I saw him open for Nanci Griffith. (I said I’d like to put them both on the same stage and see who wins.)
So Jim finally has a new album on a “real” label. And guess who co-produced it? Julian Coryell (with Joe Zook, who’s also done the studio thing with Liz Phair, Rufus Wainwright and Courtney Love). Small world, huh?
If you like Beatlesque power pop, I strongly urge you to give this album a listen. (Oh yeah, for you music geeks: Boggia co-wrote songs for this CD with Emmitt Rhodes, Jill Sobule and Aimee Mann, who all appear on the album. ) Click here to go to Amazon and listen to song samples.
Wake
Give your bleary head a shake
Re-negotiate your clock for time
Then, clear your mind and
Rise
Brush the sleepdust from your eyes
Take a shower to return you to
the waking you thatShines
Like the day you’re going to shineDrive
Watch the streets become alive
with the restless souls who, just like you
are rushing to their
Job
The part of every day that’s robbed
The million checklists that you have to do
to make it through toShine
Like the day you’re going to shine
Every day has got a pearl inside
so take the ride and
ShineYou’re okay
It’s alright
Your nightmare’s overShine.
