Chapter Two

So much for the afterglow:
WASHINGTON - In the afterglow of the bipartisan accord announced Monday night to avert a Senate showdown on changing the filibuster rule, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist emphasized Tuesday that he wasn’t a party to the deal and would quickly try to implement the rule change if Democrats resumed use of the filibuster to derail President Bush’s judicial nominees.

Think about it. This is what Frist *HAS* to do.
His political base is narrower and shallower than that of any Senate majority leader ever. All he has are the Christian taliban — and they are normally apolitical. They have only be involved since the last election. Even now, they are making noises about sitting out 2006 and 2008 because they didn’t get everything they wanted: an up-or-down vote on *all* the nominees, and a crushing of the forces of Satan (everyone who thinks for him/herself).
Even now, the Christian taliban are calling the 7 moderate GOP senators “judases”. On “NewMax”, the Scaife-funded rightwing website, Phil Brennan actually called for them to toss ropes over tree branches and to hang themselves. (I’m not going to link to it.)
These taliban are not a normal political base who are used to wheeling-and-dealing and political compromise. They are good for a few battles, and those all have to end in *victory*.
Otherwise, they pronounce the world evil, and go back to their home schools and tent revival meetings.
Frist will have to keep manufacturing crises to keep them interested.
