Whatever Happened to Barack Obama?

I was wondering the same thing as David Sirota. Seems like he’s turned into just another cautious politician - already.

Is it a case of learning the ropes? Or was it packaging?

Barack Obama is an excellent orator, and certainly a very smart man. That doesn’t make him a progressive or even a good politician. As with people like Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and John Kerry, too many progressives want to read their own wishes into politicians like this instead of facing the reality, which (in Obama’s case, to be specific) was quite clear from the start.

Obama had huge support from the southern part of the state in the primary. For those of you who don’t live here, it is conservative, though we keep sending dems to the House. I don’t remember him once promising a liberal paradise. I do think he got a lot of people’s hopes up (includng mine) after his convention speech, but I’m willing to wait a while before passing judgement. He did spend a lot of interview time following the election trying to play down his notoriety and explaining he had a lot of work to do to fit in in his freshman year. Goodness, it’s only been 5 months, give him a break.
