I imagine that the jury probably got this right - it is difficult enough to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Killen did the deed, given the likely dearth of competent admissible evidence 41 years after the fact (no DNA, of course, and I suspect that surviving witnesses were hard to come by). Proving the mens rea necessary to get a murder, rather than manslaughter, conviction would be well nigh impossible after the passage of so much time. I don’t think this conviction is a joke at all.
Of course, the intervening 41 years of not giving a shit is a cruel, twisted joke indeed.
