Would it be too much to ask that Paper of Record acknowledge that Abazaid didn’t “seem” to contradict statements, he actually did contradict Cheney?
Why so timid, boys? Afraid Karl’ll come after you next?
WASHINGTON, June 23 - The top American commander for the Middle East said Thursday that the insurgency in Iraq had not diminished, seeming to contradict statements by Vice President Dick Cheney in recent days that the insurgents were in their “last throes.”

They are the last throes. It’s just that, per Don Rumsfeld’s latest statements, those “last throes” might be a bit protracted. Ten, fifteen years. It’s kind of like the world economy is in the “last throes” of its dependence on oil before the oil runs out.
I watched the Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on C-Span last night, The three generals sitting next to Rumsfeld twisted themselves into pretzels to avoid directly contradicting Cheney. They each wore a sheen of sweat, especially Abazaid.
