My Prerogative

We were watching a local “American Idol” clone show tonight, and I had to turn it off. All those glissandos and trills make my ears hurt; it’s not so much singing as vocal acrobatics. God forbid these would-be superstars understand the concept “Less is more.”
This one singer put so many notes into each word, the song was virtually unrecognizable as Leon Russell’s “Song for You.”
Naturally, he won.

Sounds like he’s got quite a career ahead of him as a National Anthem singer.
Don’t ever let anyone tell you that the word “glare” has less than 17 syllables.
Makes you wonder if they have the ability or the know-how to hold a note.
“Soul-yodelling.”
I miss the days when singers supported from the diaphragm and could sustain a note with clear tone and exact pitch. I think all this soul-yodelling is done to try and cover up the fact that even the best studio technology can’t fix these huge pitch problems. If you don’t sit on a note too long, maybe no one will notice that you missed it in the first place. (Worst flatting problem ever: Madonna in “Evita.” Poor Andrew Lloyd-Webber, and I NEVER thought I’d be saying that!)
