And These Closets are So Roomy

Look where “liberal” Tony Blair is sending his kid. Via AMERICABlog:
Just when I was starting to detest the little poodle a bit less, he goes and sends junior to the US to intern with Republican Congressman David Dreier of California. Dreier is the Chairman of the House rules committee so junior will have plenty of chances to get into the thick of partisan battles. The Congressman was also the co-chairman for Californians for Bush and chairman of Governor Grope’s transition team.
Dreier, you may recall, received the “Roy Cohn Award, in recognition of 24 years of working against gay and lesbian rights while living as a gay man” by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.
What the hell is wrong with Blair to have his son work for a Congressman that epitomizes what is wrong with the GOP?
Oh, you never know. Maybe the kid’s gay, too, and Dad wants him to learn about how to stay discreetly closeted. Who better than Drier to teach that particular seminar?
And by the way, it’s not going over too well with the press over there:
Downing Street last night insisted that Blair would also be seeking an internship with the Democrats after his three months had ended. They also denied the job had been ‘fast-tracked’ as a result of his father’s White House connections.
However, they did reveal that the ambassador to the US, Sir David Manning - formerly Blair’s most trusted foreign policy aide - had been involved in the appointments process.
A spokesman for Number 10 said: “Euan Blair has been given the opportunity to take up a short unpaid internship with the rules committee of the House of Representatives. He also hopes for a short, unpaid internship with a Democrat member of Congress.
“Given the obvious sensibilities, the Prime Minister has asked the British embassy to get involved in the process.”

Blair’s three month internship remains a distant dream for most of the 100,000 bright young Americans who each year apply for a post. Only one in 20 is selected. Foreign internees are extremely rare.

Well you know, unlike the American applicants who are merely studying topics such as Poli Sci or planning, Euan is finishing a much more pertinent education in Ancient History that should push him to the top of the consideration list. In addition to learning about the American form of government (which he has no other access to learn about), Euan can bond with W over the whole DUI debacles of adolescence and, possibly, be fixed up with one of the Bush twins to foster the political good will necessary between royal houses.
Wake up, boys: all high-level UK politicians are gay and Miranda Blair and his turkey-baster-generated son are no exception!
Oh…god. The dreaded Dreier is my congressCRITTER.
Well, as someone who studied Classics as an undergrad, I have to say that I think we’d be better off if more Ancient studies graduates worked on the Hill:)
But seriously, I do think that any liberal education ought to be acceptable for an entry-level position. Filling the Hill with just poli sci graduates tends to skew the place away from people with broadly human interests. I think that some diversity is warranted.
All the other points stand though.
Hmmm…in the last quote, shouldn’t that be “interns” not “internees”? After all, Euan’s going to be an intern, not be interned, at least unless he REALLY fucks up. People in Guantanamo Bay are internees.
What Abby said.
And I like the idea of internees, too.
Maybe after Dreier, he should go work for Barny Frank. Then he could experience what it’s like to be a gay politician out of the closet and proud of it.
