The Person Who Has Been Briefed on the Matter

The person who provided the information about Mr. Rove’s conversation with Mr. Novak declined to be identified, citing requests by Mr. Fitzgerald that no one discuss the case. The person discussed the matter in the belief that Mr. Rove was truthful in saying that he had not disclosed Ms. Wilson’s identity.
On Oct. 1, 2003, Mr. Novak wrote another column in which he described calling two officials who were his sources for the earlier column. The first source, whose identity has not been revealed, provided the outlines of the story and was described by Mr. Novak as “no partisan gunslinger.” Mr. Novak wrote that when he called a second official for confirmation, the source said, “Oh, you know about it.”
That second source was Mr. Rove, the person briefed on the matter said. Mr. Rove’s account to investigators about what he told Mr. Novak was similar in its message although the White House adviser’s recollection of the exact words was slightly different. Asked by investigators how he knew enough to leave Mr. Novak with the impression that his information was accurate, Mr. Rove said he had heard parts of the story from other journalists but had not heard Ms. Wilson’s name.
Long-time Rove observers all say the same thing: Rove knows not to leave his fingerprints on it. He’d have someone else do it, then sit back and watch the fun. So let’s not assume anything just yet.
I can clarify one thing in this rather tortured article: While Rove has not been identified as a target (and of course Rove’s attorney doesn’t specify how recently he’s received that reassurance), he’s clearly a “subject,” which means he’s still being investigated and may still become a target.
This whole piece strikes me as a not-so-subtle attempt at rehabbing Karl. I’ll wait to see what the special prosecutor says.
UPDATE: Liberal Oasis checks in:
The news today should be about how a Bush Administration leak of the name of an Al Qaeda member turned double agent in Aug. 2004, hurt a British counterterror operation, allowing suspected terrorists to escape — including possibly the eventual London Bombers.
As the leak was part of justifying a politically timed terror alert, right after the Dem Convention, this would be a second example of the Bush Administration misusing classified information for political purposes, harming our national security.
But more likely, the punditocracy will ignore the pattern that’s emerging, and flock to today’s NY Times report, claiming that Karl Rove didn’t leak Plame’s name to Bob Novak, but Novak told it to Rove.
It is stupefying that the NY Times would print this story.

I’m really confused.
The AP this morning says that Rove testified that Novak was Rove’s source for the info that Rove then passed to Cooper. That is, Novak knew before Rove.
But the article above says that Novak used Rove as his confirming source, meaning Rove must have learned of it independent of Novak.
The only conclusion I can draw is that either Rove and/or Novak is lying, or one or both of the reporters has gotten it wrong.
Is Judy Miller working the phones from jail?
I’m waiting for the NY Times to run a story saying that Wen Ho Lee did it.
