Tech Puzzle

Just because it’s bugging me:
My best friend has a login shortcut to her firm’s software vendor on her Windows XP desktop. She’s been using it all along, no problem. On Friday, it stopped working. Not only that, she can no longer get to the website via her browser. (No one else was having a problem.)
Now, I sort of enjoy obessing over little tech problems like this. I looked around and the only thing I could find was a warning that it might occur with login shortcuts as the result of a Windows security update - but only when it already included the password.
This didn’t. So I’m kind of curious. Geeks, any thoughts?

First, Susie, try it from your PC.
Maybe the URL has changed? Is it a top level site or into some page not at the top? Try the simple first — http://www.oracle.com. http://www.ibm.com — and then navigating your way in.
It might be other things — did JavaScript turned off? Maybe an expired cookie?
most ppl i encounter who have issues using new ms security updates simply turn them off. they don’t appear to be urgently needed contrary to what microsoft may say. their pc’s usually work fine after they’ve turned them off.
they can turn it of by unchecking it in the start-run-msconfig-startup window.
