Billmon on the CAFTA bazaar:
The thing that really alarms me about all this is the utter brazeness with which the loot is being divvied up now. The Dixiepublicans are acting as if there is simply no chance they will ever be held accountable for their sins anywhere short of the pearly gates. (And DeLay’s probably thinking: “If I just slip ol’ St. Peter a couple of C notes . . .” )
This, even more than the hard evidence, is what feeds my suspicion that the Rovians have something wired — or think they do. Whether it’s the computerized voting machines (or the far less complex software inside the heads of the sleepwalking fools who use them) I don’t know. But it suggests the pork party could get a lot wilder, and last quite a bit longer, before the money finally runs out.
Rome, after all, was enormously corrupt for centuries before it fell. Texas has been going at it for almost 180 years. There’s no reason to think this particular gang of Texans can’t keep it up (so to speak) for a few more years — maybe even decades.
After all, who says cowboys can’t look good in togas?
