A Christian-esque Nation

I kept forgetting to mention this other excellent article from the August Harper’s, because it goes into depth about something I say all the time: These fundies and assorted other people trying to run the country aren’t real Christians.
This is only an excerpt, you’ll have to buy the mag. But it points out what I’ve thought for a while: Most American “Christians” are only a vague approximation of the real thing.
Kind of like how conservatives think they actually fought in Vietnam because they’ve seen so many movies about it…

There is an excellent book called “Stealing Jesus” which discusses this in detail. Well worth picking up.
By that formula, Bruce, Catholics aren’t Christians because they believe that salvation requires both faith and works.
And since the Catholic church is the Original Recipe Christian Church, that makes little to no sense.
Plus, what about those who believe in Christ, yadda, yadda, but haven’t been “saved” (which is a concept I’ve never gotten a straight answer on when I’ve asked what, precisely, it means)?
Well, Zuzu, what you’ve accurately pointed out is the limit on my theological knowledge.
Dunno about your “little to no sense” point. I think the biblical foundation of the belief is open to interpretation (I’m no fundamentlist). Besides, I prefer extra-crispy.
As for the “Saved” thing, my take is that some people need their belief to be announced to a lot of other folks. When it’s public, they’re saved.
