Misty Water-Colored Memories

I had an unexpected treat last night. One of my readers was in town and took Jim C. and myself out to the White Dog Cafe.
I’d suggested the place, but I forgot this was move-in weekend at Penn and boy, was it crowded on campus. (Not to mention that most of the area parking meters had those “Temporary No Parking” signs on them.) But I finally found a legal spot only a few blocks away; besides, it was such a beautiful evening, I didn’t mind walking.
This is one of my favorite restaurants, but it’s a little steep for my purse. (I only go here when someone else treats.) I remember one time dragging the crazy alcoholic lawyer here; I noticed he was very tense, probably assuming they wouldn’t have any food he recognized as such. (Awfully provincial, that one. He only liked to go out to places that were in a five-mile radius of home.) He agreed to go only because he was trying to impress me.
I still remember the look of shocked relief on his face when he finally opened the menu. “Didn’t think they’d have meat, did you?” I said, smirking. “I suppose you thought they only had tofu.” (Sometimes I’m really obnoxious to people just to amuse myself. I try to stop myself but after all, it’s fun.)
As I recall, he got a steak. (And several Manhattans. And a bottle of wine. And coffee and Kahlua.) And I got this beautiful memory of me, yanking his chain.
