Site Design Change
Aug 28th, 2005 at 9:20 pm by Chris
Hello, my name is Chris. You probably don’t know me, but I’m Susie’s tech guy and I have a favor to ask of all of you. As I’m certain you’ve noticed, the design of Suburban Guerrilla has just changed significantly. The reasons for this are multitude, but the primary goal behind the switch is to make Suburban Guerrilla easier to navigate for the readers while, at the same time, providing better ad placement for Susie’s advertisers.
The thing Susie and I need from everybody is constructive criticism, as well as bug reports. There are a number of things about the new design that I know need to be fixed, such as the placement of the comments form and the width of the header. That said, I’m just one person with one computer and I’m going to miss quite a number of problems. If you run across any bugs which make this site unusable, or anything that makes Susie’s writing harder to read, please take the time to either leave a comment on this post, or email me at chris@rowhouselogic.com.
Keep in mind that nobody responds well to criticisms that are no deeper than “it looks like crap.” Aesthetic critique is most welcome, but we really need more detail than that.

I think it looks great. I’ll let you know if I run into any bugs.
I like the look … somehow seems “cleaner.” Also, maybe coincidentally or maybe not, it loaded a heckuva lot faster on my computer that the old format.
The old look was fine, but this is even better. I agree that it seems “cleaner,” and also that it loaded faster. Great job!
I had a few problems posting comments because of a beta spam filter.
All seems well in Firefox on my Linux box here. For what it’s worth (and for the sake of completeness), in Konqueror the very bottom ad seems to have wandered up to the top, where it’s partially overlapped by the blogads box. A minor issue, and one which Galeon doesn’t share.
Nice, minty fresh. Looks great. What font are you using for the title?
The blog looks great!
Congrats on the new look!
Nice work! Just one minor suggestion for easier navigation : articles headers in bold, as it was in the previous layout, would be great!
You have done a great job ….I run Firefox and it loads fast …
Scaramouce, what spam filter problems did you run into?
Jay, it’s BernhartFashion BT.
Thanks for the feedback everyone. The most consistent critique so far, both here and in my email, is the need for a left border on the ads column. I’ll do some experiments on that later today or tonight.
No problems viewing from Opera.
It looks great, Chris, & it’s zippity quick in both firefox & IE, though there are some slight differences (e.g., the little >> bullets on the recent posts, etc. are not visible in IE, and the borders in firefox are all 1 pt & more often solid black than in IE, where the widths and colors vary more) visible on both of the monitors I’m looking at now. Will check it out on crappy monitors and lower resolution later.
The top image (with the title) and the bottom blue footer thing are slightly wider than the main text section; they don’t line up on the right — not a big deal, obviously, but the kind of thing I would fix if it were mine. Also I might put a right-hand border on the ad column to match the one on the left, but then again I might not.
I really like the numbered comments, and how it’s clear which comment belongs to whom. I also like the use of Lucida Grande; very legible & easy on the eyes, esp. in the slightly off-black color.
A nitpick: the Recent Posts, Categories and Blogroll lists in ALL CAPS are hard to read; U&lc, please? (Viewed w/Firefox.)
i miss the big picture.
i’m in shock though, and will need time to adjust to the changes.
