The Good Old Days

The Justice Department has just given Georgia the go-ahead to disenfranchise anyone who doesn’t have a driver’s license. The law is supposedly intended to deter fraud, but no one has come up with an actual examples of voting-by-impersonation, and the law specifically exempts absentee voting.
The true purpose of the law, and its certain effect, is to reduce the number of poor, elderly, black and otherwise Democratic-leaning voters.
Under the Reagan Administration, the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department was widely referred to as the “State’s Rights Division.” That ugly tradition seems to have been revived.

Serfs … that is what they want … stay home and work … they will take care of you … the only vote they want to protect is their own … the only reason for this type of law is to stop voters they can not control from voting … it is exactly the same as the old land holder laws … to these people money talks …and it is the only thing they can hear … as for the rest of us … we are working for a nickel trying to make a dime ..
This is the Ownership Society the neocons have in mind for our near future.
Effective 2nd-class citizenship, based on a means test. Obstacle after obstacle to actually voting.
Visualize poor, non-white, working class people voting at an election booth — you don’t want very much of that going on– so you sit back and start visualizing ways to make it hard, and harder, and harder for them working folks to ever get to that voting booth, or honestly counting votes they cast.
how about… senior citizens who no longer drive? hmmm in a lot of states, they are the largest voter turnout…and hmmmm in a lot of states, they vote democratic…..how about also, someone who has had their drivers license suspended… or revoked? tough luck?
