Candidate-Free Night

Oddly enough, no candidates at DL last night. But we did have some nice new faces, including Jen and Hannah from Philly for Change; Erin, a nursing student from Penn and Al, the thoughtful bagel shop owner from South Jersey who brought me a birthdaycard! (As did the lovely Mrs. Atrios.) Oh, and Jeremy was kind enough to treat me to dinner. Life is good.
Jeremy just returned from a trip to Syria; he’s a real travel junkie and he loves the Middle East. He informed me you’re not allowed to mention Israel in Syria, “so I kept the Jew thing under my hat.” (Which phrase struck me as very funny.) He said people asked him if he was (nudge nudge wink wink) “Italian-American,” and he said yes. And instead of talking about his time in Israel, he referred to it as Italy.
He also attended the anti-war protest in Damascus last Saturday:
I had never seen a flag burning before. i always imagined flag burning to be an angry passionate thing. but this really wasn’t. it seemed like the protesters simply felt they needed to burn an american flag at some point and so they set out to do it. it was more matter-of-fact than passionate. if anything, they just seemed frustrated when the damn thing wouldn’t light.

Maybe that’s why so many of us progressives just want to get all the relevant people to “keep the Jew thing under their hats”. And are upset at the relevant people for not cooperating.
