The Local Scene

Got this letter this morning from a friend who’s active in Philly for Change:
This article in the Inky today indicated the (for what it’s worth) Philadelphia magazine is calling John Perzel the #2 most powerful individual in the region. A Republican from Philadelphia. Ugh! Gov Rendell is #3, behind him.
What does this say about the state of the Democratic party in the county and region? It’s ridiculous that they allow this to continue on virtually unimpeded. Getting this seat filled by a Democrat should be the number one priority of the party locally and state-wide. But instead the local guys trade body blows fighting over who next gets to reign over the culture of corruption here in Philadelphia. All the while letting Republicans in Harrisburg and rural Pennsylvania call the big shots for us, like the School District, the Parking Authority, redistricting our congressman out of jobs, etc.
Amen, amen, amen.

Thanks, dear.
BTW, ‘our congressmen [sic]‘ refers to a Philadelphia district erased, and replaced by a part-city/part-suburb district. While the suburbs need representation as qualified as us, they operate as municipalities numbered in 1,000s or 10,000s, not the 100,000s here in Philadelphia. Things change when you cross that county line. (Ask SEPTA riders) And I’m sure the suburban residents would appreciate a rep who didn’t have to spend time dealing with the needs of Philadelphia, too.
They did it thinking they’d get a republican seat out of it. But that hasn’t worked out for them so well. So the voters really need to ask: were our needs met? Or were they abused for political gain, and we ended up shortchanged in the deal?
