The Eve of All Hallows

What could be a better night for banishing the ghosts that haunt you? I think Halloween is much better suited to new beginnings than New Year’s Eve.
I’ve been wary of this holiday for a while. My ex-husband and I finally agreed to a divorce on Halloween, and it’s been associated in my mind ever since with a certain sadness.
He’s stopped haunting me; I suppose he’s busy elsewhere. The weird Morse code signals in the computer speakers were, as one of my readers suggested, the result of cell phone interference. But no one’s come up with a rational explanation for the CD player that opens and closes at random, or the odometer that hasn’t worked since the time I asked him to fix it and it began to turn.
His ashes aren’t in the trunk anymore. (I put them in a storage shed outside my apartment building.) Maybe that’s why I haven’t seen him.
Anyway. Happy Halloween, y’all.
