Wanton Sluts

I get so tired of the whole abortion debate, because if it were only about that, opponents would be spending a lot more time pushing birth control.
It’s about sex. It always is.
It’s about women who like sex, have it and then have the nerve to not stand up and take their God-given punishment - especially when other people are willing to step up and adopt their little white babies.
It’s about control.
It’s not about spousal rights, either. If it were, men would need their wife’s permission to get a vasectomy.
I wish these angry, repressed people would find something to do with their lives that doesn’t involve sniffing someone else’s sheets. I wish people didn’t think of women and babies as property, and that legislators who can’t seem to keep their own pants zipped didn’t stick their noses in other people’s business.
But gee, that would put the Republican party out of business.

I’ve always assumed anti-abortionists were driven by “when I get ‘er pregnant, she’ll damn well STAY pregnant, and bear me my child!” feelings.
If it were just about “women shouldn’t enjoy sex,” then there’d be an exception for rape victims.
The abortion issue provides cover while they loot the treasury. They really don’t want Roe v. Wade overturned because it would leave them with one less issue to fund-raise.
As someone put it recently, some people aren’t really pro-life as much as they’re pro-birth. If they were “pro-life” they would fund alternatives to abortion, including financial/medical support for the mothers who need it during their pregnancies, and providing continuing assistance after childbirth in raising the child. That includes adoption, and so far, I haven’t noticed many of them eagerly volunteering.
“take their God-given punishment”
This has always been my take on it too. If they cared so much about the sweet innocent little babies they wouldn’t resent public funds for health care, education, welfare, head start, etc. Once they are born who gives a damn? Let them starve and freeze out on the streets, a slow painful death or a life of misery is a-ok with these people.
John, it’s about control and ownership, and punishing those women who will not be controlled and owned. So you got it right with the ones who want to keep the little wifey pregnant, but you’re missing the point with the ones who were raped. They asked for it.
Donna — I think the biggest gut-level resistance is more about reproduction and bloodlines and inheritance and such. Sure, there’s the “wanton slut” bit about it, but I think that’s a later add-on, perhaps even started as a backup to the bloodline thing.
As for who gives a damn about babies, it’s about who gives a damn about OTHER MEN’S babies.
You know how much I love you, Susan. So I hate to post a dissenting opinion…. There are some of us on the left who oppose abortion too. I won’t speak for anyone else, but for me it has nothing at all to do with sex.
In my mind, the greatest tragedy is the lost potential when a child is aborted. That’s also the same reason I’m a Democrat. The R’s just want the kid to be born and to hell with his or her potential after that.
But what are we losing when a kid isn’t born, isn’t given a safe and nurturing home, a decent education, a sense of self-worth, the opportunity to become everything possible?
The potential of the human race is boundless. But every day we piss it away in those who are not born and in those we completely fail after their birth
Ok, I’m ready for my flogging now…..
Mike, I know how you feel. And I know you are truly pro-LIFE - as opposed to those who are only pro-birth. No flogging from me.
But I do know quite a few people who aren’t like you, and any discussion of abortion with them invariably ends up in “wanton slut” territory.
this the best post title on th net today……..you are so vwey right about the big point .. if all they wanted was to stop abortion ter birthcontrol would be mandatory and free,,,they just hate the idea of women makingchoicrs on their own…without defering toa man…
My paper dutifully published a letter to the editor today from someone who wished that these sluts who thought they had the judgement to abort had the judgment to quit screwing around in the first place.
Sigh.
I looked over the breakfast table at my beautiful teenage daughter and wanted to scream at her, “Be careful! You will take all the responsibility! YOU will be the slut!”
But it was very early, I hadn’t had my coffee yet, and she wouldn’t know what the hell I was talking about. She doesn’t yet know that a significant portion of the population sees her as nothing more than a slut just waiting to happen. That all women are either angels or harlots, but none are just human beings. That men who impregnate women will never, ever be held responsible for their actions. Only women.
The hatred toward women is so palpable that it sends chills. How in the name of God am I supposed to tell her this?
Sorry–shoulda read:
Mike G–If most of the anti-abortion crowd were like you, do you think it would be such a hot button?
The thing is, everyone who opposes abortion claims to be interested in the welfare of what they see as children–and, as pointed out, most of ‘em are lying through their teeth.
One good thing the GOP has done in this area (inadvertently, of course)is to make it very easy to tell who’s pro-life and who’s just anti-sex: No one who voted for Bush can remotely be described as “pro-life.”
To me, the point is STILL this: this is America, and even we mere women of childbearing age and condition are supposed to be FREE. When society forces me to use my body to incubate a baby I do not wish to incubate — for whatever reason — I AM NOT FREE. American citizens not in childbearing condition, for whatever reason (age, sex, health, other) are not routinely forced to relinquish the use of their entire “physiological plant,” much less their future health and even their life, to assist any other human being for any reason, even if such relinquishment (1) would not cause the donor death or substantial long-term impairment, and (2) would save the life of the recipient. These lucky non-female non-breeders are not forced to donate bone marrow, corneal tissue, skin, hormones, hair follicles, bone, stem cells, sperm, ova — not even something as easily accessible and renewable as blood. And in order to secure their freedom from such physiological intrusions, they simply have to live their lives from day to day, without being told those freedoms can only be secured if they abstain from basic, normal, adult human behaviors. By contrast, we females in childbearing condition are smugly told that the only way we can reliably avoid such intrusions is to abstain from sexual intercourse. Freedom is not always comfortable or pretty. Tyranny is even less so.
