Poll conducted in the aftermath of 2005 races in Va., N.J., Ohio & Calif. highlight reasons voters cast ballots.
George W. Bush’s current low approval ratings were a major factor in defeats handed to Republican candidates and initiatives sponsored by the Republican governor of the nation’s most populous state, surveys conducted in key 2005 battlegrounds by Zogby International show.
The surveys, conducted in Virginia, New Jersey, California and Ohio, highlight the reasons voters in those four states cast ballots against GOP gubernatorial candidates in Virginia and New Jersey and against four reform initiatives backed by Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in California.
“There are some exceptions to the idea that all politics is local, and Republicans in Virginia, California and New Jersey are smarting from a failure to realize that. People pay attention to what their leaders are supporting, and this poll shows some leading Republicans figures don’t wear the coattails they once did,” said Fritz Wenzel, Zogby International’s communications director.
