I think it would be illustrative for all of you to read this, “The Plot to Seize the White House.” It’s about the plot by America’s own corporate fascists to seize the White House from FDR. The book is out of print; legend has it that the duPont family bought up all the remaining copies.

My public library has a copy & I read it a while back. A cautionary tale if there ever was one.
Isn’t that the same story as Philip Roth’s “The Plot Against America”?
Nope.
It details a plot in the 1930’s, to recruit an American military hero, retired Marine General Smedley D. Butler to form a veterans army to back efforts to force FDR out of power into a figurehead role, with Butler as the true executive. The idea was based on how Benito Mussolini gained power in Italy.
Butler plays them along, turns the tables, and with help of a reporter breaks up the plot. The House Committee on Un-American Affairs even comes into play, holding hearings which document the whole mess for posterity.
It’s a page turner, and unlike the Roth book, it’s non-fiction.
I am presently reading the book at the link provided. it seems relatively well-sourced and accurate, and it certainly is a cautionary tale.
It would be a terrific movie too. I see great dramatic potential in the relationship between Butler and Macguire….
if any of you leftist hollywood whackjobs want to collaborate, I am all over it!
