That’s the real state of the union:
WASHINGTON - People are skeptical about the economy despite recent encouraging signs, with worries about the costs of gas, heating oil and health care.
Views of the economy show sharp partisan differences, with Republicans far more likely to be optimistic than either Democrats or independents, according to the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press.
“There’s not as much economic optimism as might be warranted by hard economic indicators,” said Andrew Kohut, director of the Pew Research Center, said Tuesday. “I was surprised by the growing gap between the way Republicans and the rest of the public see the national economy.”
About a third, 34 percent, said economic conditions today are excellent or good, while 64 percent said only fair or poor. That’s up slightly from the 25 percent who said in October that economic conditions are excellent or good, but down slightly from 39 percent who felt that way right after Bush was re-elected.

What joke! The economy is killing us. We’ve all seen our our insurance rates rise, our pensions disappear. We’ve lost our jobs or we’ve been demoted. Energy costs are keeping our homes at 62 degrees and inflation makes us fall farther behind every month… Most of us wonder if we can ever send our kids to college and how we’ll survive when we can’t work anymore.
You know they are spinning when they include “excellent” and “good” in the same group.
How about the numbers for average income and income increase/decrease?
for the last 10-12 years I had been able to keep a buffer in my checking account…in the last two-three years it has all but vanished. Every type of insurance has increased from 25% to 50%+, utilities have gone up and so has all energy cost ( of course I have been waiting for that for some years now, that one is over due) And of course all your food expenses go up also. I believe most working people are in a similar fix, so any disruption in the work place could put many in crisis. And you have got to wonder that so many people (the legit votes) voted against their best interest. I think this is but the start of a serious affront on the working and middle class.
I’d love to see how income correlates to political affiliation in this sort of poll. Perhaps Republicans are optimistic because they’re still trying to figure out how to spend their $100,000 plus in tax cuts. I mean, you can only buy so many Hummers. For the rest of us, the $500 we got back is long gone…
he was surprised to see how differently republicans view the economy? gimme a freakin break.
