Does it matter what he says?

One thing that has happened since he started his reign is that the SOTU is a waste of time–all spin, no substance and it tells you nothing about the current national situation–or even the WH’s actual opinion of the current sitch–or his intentions for the coming year. It’s just an hour or so of flat-out lying.

SOTU - sounds of the underground?

Oh, State O’ Tha Union. Doh!

So, today, a mainstream middle American Republican voter who disagrees with me 80-percent of the time asked me, “Tommy, what did you think of the President’s speech last night?”

“Joy,” I said, “One opinion I have is I don’t think that President wrote that speech.”

And then I said, “I don’t want to talk about the speech, though. I want to talk about policy stuff. What do you think we should be doing about health care and health insurance? What do you think we should be doing about education? What do you think we should doing about foreign policy?”

And then we had a fairly simple conversation about common sensical ways things could be done better. We agreed much more than we disagreed.

One of the fundamental things an addict learns is that we’ll make more progress if we can focus on principles rather than personalities.

You can look to the SOTU for tips about distractions and the language of distractions that will help to divert people from thinking and talking about stuff that matters a whole lot more. Damn it.

Change the subject to what you think is more important. Damn it.

Don’t let those SOBs set the agenda.

Damn it.
