Okay, the G4 is working with the Ethernet connection and all I had to do was plug it in. But it’s all weird on some sites, like it not taking my password for my email for the first ten or so tries on one.
And I really hate the mouse - and the keyboard. Don’t suppose they make a trackball mouse and split keyboard for Apples? Ones that don’t cost an arm and a leg, I mean.

USB trackballs and keyboards for the Mac aren’t that hard to come by and aren’t that expensive. Just about any USB mouse/trackball will work without drivers. If you’re using OS X, right-clicking is supported without drivers too. In OS 9 or less, you’ll need driver software to right-click. Control-click gives you the right-click menu too.
Any USB keyboard will work too, but I don’t recommend using a Windows keyboard because you’ll go nuts trying to suss out which of the modifier keys (control, option, alt, command/Apple, Windows keys) does what. I’ve never had any problem using Apple’s original equipment keyboards, but third-party keyboards designed for Macs will feel more like the Windows keyboards you’re probably used to. If you can’t find what you’re looking for locally (CompUSA or MicroCenter) there are Mac merchants online that specialize in discontinued gear from whom you can get bargains. Try MegaMacs, Small Dog or MacResQ.
Kensington makes a great trackball.
Trackballs are wonderful. I’ve forgotten how to use a mouse. Mine is more important to me than my keyboard and way handier with four programmable buttons.
Which browser are you using? Safari is fast, but it’s not supported by a lot of sites, so now and then a site just won’t work. That problem with the passwords started a couple of updates ago. I haven’t found a fix for it yet. MSIE will take forever. Firefox has its problems, too, but it will load most sites correctly and your passwords will work. I still use Safari because the other browsers seem so slow after you get used to it.
For peripherals, go to MacMall.com - they have almost anything you’d want.
Another browser you might want to try is Camino (also from Mozilla). After audible.com ‘upgraded’ their website Safari got really screwy, so I had to switch to Camino in order to be able to download my audio books. I still use Safari for everything else.
You can find mice and keyboards at Staples… prices vary but they can be had on the cheap.
As for your browser, I bounce between Mozilla and Safari. I avoid Internet Explorer as it doesn’t render some sites correctly.
Check the mail preferences in your mail program to make sure you have your password saved there. I have it so I don’t have to enter it each tiime. In Outlook it’s under Tools -> Accounts. In MacMail it’s under Preferences -> Accounts, double-clicking on your e-mail name. Save your password there.
although the page doesn’t say it’s suitable for Macs, i’m using this one on mine.
suggest you use a usb 2-button mouse with wheel…works fine as noted in comment 1.
mac keyboard is more tied to OS, so mebbe hang with it, and grit your teeth, that is what I did.
mozilla worked great, I avoided safari at every turn.
