It’s somewhat underwhelming, but it should improve with time. Washington Post Radio took the place of the city’s all-news station, WTOP, a 50kW powerhouse at 1500kHz on the AM dial.
The morning drive show’s pretty good, with reports from Post reporters and some good continuity. Hourly news is supplied by the AP Network and there’s a one-minute snippet on the half hour from NBC Radio. The noon-3pm slot is also quite good, hosted by veteran radio guy Sam Litzinger. Late afternoons and evenings are hosted by Bob Kur, lately of NBC.
But the 10am-noon slot is filled with a lightweight chatterfest that sounds like a simulcast of ABC-TV’s “The View.” I found it almost unlistenable.
Ironically, WTOP Radio used to be owned by the Washington Post — until the FCC made them sell it, to avoid “media concentration,” i.e., one entity owning a newspaper and a radio or TV station in the same market. The new station (along with all-news WTOP, which is now on FM, and several others in Washington)is owned by Bonneville Broadcasting — an arm of the Mormon Church.
I’ll keep my ears open…
