An Inconvenient Truth

So tonight I saw the premiere of the Al Gore documentary on global warming, “An Inconvenient Truth,” and I got to meet the president after. I told him I was at his historic President’s Day speech in Washington and thanked him for the inspiration. (I figured I wouldn’t get much of an answer if I asked if he would run again, so instead I asked if he’d be out stumping for the congressional mid-terms. “Yes, of course,” he said. Which means, for what it’s worth, that he’s keeping his political options open.)
The movie opens June 2, and it’s great. Plan on going, and do take your kids. Any reasonably intelligent 10-year-old will get it - lots of graphics, a bit from “Futurama,” compelling nature photography to document the catastrophic ice melts.
Surprisingly, the film follows the old writer’s adage of “show, don’t tell.” No urgent speeches about how little time we have left to fix this - the information speaks for itself, and that makes it even more powerful. Despite the inevitable attacks to come from the corporate statists and the usual right-wing shills, this movie packs the same kind of punch as Michael Moore’s “Farenheit 9/11″ (not just because of the eerily reminiscent soundtrack) and I don’t think most people will pay attention. (After all, those bozos are the same people who brought us that wonderful Iraq adventure.)
On a social note, Mr. & Mrs. Atrios were there, as was Noz. Senate candidate Alan Sandals was there, and so was Pennsylvania’s leading elected environmentalist, state Rep. Greg Vitali.
UPDATE: Noz reminds us that in response to a question from local radio icon Pierre Robert, Al pooh-poohed the scene described by Joe Klein in his new book that had Democratic consultants telling Gore not to talk about the environment during the presidential campaign. Gore said the meeting never happened.

Hey, Susie, come on over and join the Draft Gore 2008 effort! It’s never too early (as we all know that G.O.R.E. actually stands for Grassroots Organizing Real Early.)
I know, Pennsylvania Senate comes first. But keep us on your back burner.
Yes, do it, Susie. Gore is the only one of the bunch of possibles who isn’t tainted by the invasion of Iraq. That may well have more to do with him not being in the Senate or House when the vote to give the mental midget the authority to attack was taken than him having the courage to stand up and be counted when such a stand would have meant horrible castigation. What isn’t to like with his position on environment and in spite of the moronic attacks on him over his claim that he was there at the birth of the Internet, he *was.*

Let’s talk about the fleet of SUVs and lomousines Gore takes with him to drive 50 yards from the hotel to the theater where his film debuts. That aught to go a long way to warming things up.
