From a 1992 interview with Al Gore:
Senator Gore tells me about a new movie, whose premiere he attended, called ‘Mindwalk‘, made by Fritjof Capra and his brother Bert and starring Liv Ullman, Sam Waterstone and John Heard. It’s about a Democratic senator who ran for President in 1988 and lost but is now totally absorbed in the global ecological crisis. The film takes the form of a two hour conversation between these protagonists as they wander round Mont St Michel. He could well be the model. He has certainly dedicated the rest of his life to his vision of global change. But is he for real? As real as rain, as they say in Tennessee.
Anyone ever see this? First I’ve heard of it…

I remember seeing it years ago. I remember thinking how intelligently written it was, and what a pleasure it was to watch a non-violent, literate movie. Waterston was nicely cast.

I hadn’t heard of it, either. But IMDB typically has everything…
It’s a bit dry, but interesting.
You do watch with a certain amazement that the idea can work at all….
I saw it when it came out, and more recently when it was playing on one of the free cable movie channels. Liv Ullman, a physicist, explains to Waterston, a U.S. Senator, and John Heard, a poet, about the difference between the Cartesian clock-work model of the universe and what might be described as the systems theory model. They indulge in some hokey generalizations about “science,” “poetry,” and “politics,” and discuss how the three interact in light of an evolving scientific world-view. Lots of preachy moments, but overall smart and interesting. The three actors (plus a bit part by Ione Skye) make the personal interactions between the characters as interesting as their conversation.
