So I’m sitting outside tonight at Drinking Liberally when my friend Lionel walks past with his new guitar, which he proceeds to show me. We start talking guitars, and he tells me his wife told him if he brought home a new one, he had to get rid of one of the others. “Which one?” I asked, reminding him of the famous T-shirt slogan: “My wife says if I buy one more guitar, she’ll leave me. Sure gonna miss her!”
He tells me he has an old F-hole he’s going to get rid of. “Archtop?” I ask. Yes, he says. He can’t even remember the name but he thinks it’s from Sears.

“A Sears Silvertone?” I say, and I laugh. My friend Lida had one of these in high school and I used to play it all the time.
“The neck needs to be reset, it’s only good for slide,” he says. “If you want it…”
Damn. I’ve been pining away for a suitable slide guitar ever since I had to sell my Strat.
Lionel goes home, puts his kid to bed and comes back with the guitar. (Gives me a new metal slide, too.)
Sometimes life is so good, it hurts.

I learned to play guitar around 11-12 years old. My co-conspirator (same age) that summer had a sears silvertone archtop.
He took it to the cape played it on the beach and “surfed” on it in the water.
He still had it in the Fall.
here’s a thought. record a nice slide tune and post it on your blog. WOuld love to hear it
