Trent Lott. Remember this?
When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over all these years, either.

Yes he was wrong to say this and should not come back into the leadership.
But I seemed to have missed your post lamenting the fact that former KKK member Robert Byrd just became the longest serving member of the senate in history. Let’s have the same standards for both sides of the aisle.
John, while it’s not for me to jump in and defend a much better blogger than I, lemme tell you how I see it being different.
Trent Lott’s statement is a contemporary yearning for a racist ideology. Byrd’s disgusting alliance with that same ideology was decades ago and he has very effectively and sincerely repudiated them.
Had Byrd or any other Democrat said something like Lott did, they would deserve the same treatment which Lott deserves. He should be repudiated and sent riding into the sunset carrying his confederate flag.

It seems that John is a troll rather than someone interested in consistent standards for both parties.
No I’m not a troll and I would like to see consistant standards for both parties. But it’s a stupid little dream since neither side would ever have the full guts to admit their own failings, and yes there are plenty of times I have failed to notice the problems on my side.
Sorry, John, but who other than a troll would be able to overlook the crucial difference between a very old and repudiated position and a currently-held one?
Equating Byrd and Lott is absurd.
One has grown greatly in office, and the other greatly in girth.
