Maybe you’ve seen them - the pictures of little Israeli girls writing messages on artillery shells that will be used in Lebanon?
Here’s the rest of the story.

I’m not exactly sure what the CJR writer was implying. That these photos become less disturbing with more context?
Um, sorry, but that just didn’t do it for me.
Rationalize those pictures…they are what they are.
These parents who handed the markers to their kids are the same people who decided that it would be a good idea for their kids to live in this flashpoint city that has been the scene of the slaughter of children in the past. These poor kids have a lot in common with the victimzed Palestinian children dressed up in suicide-bomber outfits, thrown like Isaac on the altar of their parents’ beliefs.
I’m not sure what your point is, Susie, in featuring this CJR story. Do you think that the Israeli side of the story is not being told with enough context? If so, could I ask how much context has been presented here about the innocent victims of those artillery shells?
I’m not rationalizing. I’m trying to understand how those parents rationalized it.
there is no context that makes what those pictures depict ok.
when i clicked on the link i was hoping to find out that the photos were doctored or something, and was excited about posting a correction to my posts.
alas, not the case.
teaching children to hate “the other” is wrong no matter who that other is, or where you live. it’s revolting.
So, the pictures are just what those who took them and those who published them said they were. Not sure what to make of this posting. I don’t come away any less horrified.
Nor should you. I’m only trying to add another piece to the puzzle.
What I don’t understand about the article writer is that it seems so important to put Israelis “in context” but he should also say that it is important to put Palestinians in context. Those Palestinian children dressed as bombers or holding weapons most likely lost family members to Israel bombing or raiding their villages. I notice there is no mention of the Israeli children seeing family members killed. Just like the Israeli children, Palestinian children have been terrorized, or in hiding for days, or bored when they can’t leave their homes too. Does that make glorifying war acceptable or does this line of reasoning only work for Jewish children and their parents? I’d say it’s still unacceptable for these Israeli children just as it is still unacceptable for the Palestinian children whether in context or not.
