WASHINGTON, July 21 — The Bush administration is rushing a delivery of precision-guided bombs to Israel, which requested the expedited shipment last week after beginning its air campaign against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, American officials said Friday.
Israel continued to drop leaflets warning residents of southern Lebanon to leave their homes.
The decision to quickly ship the weapons to Israel was made with relatively little debate within the Bush administration, the officials said. Its disclosure threatens to anger Arab governments and others because of the appearance that the United States is actively aiding the Israeli bombing campaign in a way that could be compared to Iran’s efforts to arm and resupply Hezbollah.
The munitions that the United States is sending to Israel are part of a multimillion-dollar arms sale package approved last year that Israel is able to draw on as needed, the officials said. But Israel’s request for expedited delivery of the satellite and laser-guided bombs was described as unusual by some military officers, and as an indication that Israel still had a long list of targets in Lebanon to strike.
It may soon be time to duck and cover. Because this, more than any previous action, makes the U.S. into a legitimate military target.
I’m sure that will go over well in the Arab world. You’d almost think they WANT more war in the middle east. Which they do… and since our military has a prior engagement, Israel’s military will do just find.
This sounds like a good thing to me. Israel’s request is for the expedited delivery of satellite and laser-guided bombs. These munitions are less likely to harm innocent Lebanese.
G. Weightman, get your head out of the sand. Haven’t you been watching the pornographic gun sight videos on TV of Israeli bombs falling? Didn’t you notice the pinpoint destruction of the Gaza power plant, or the Beirut airport runways, etc., etc.? The vast majority of Israel’s bombing thus far has been either with precision guided weapons, or with missiles fired at close range from helicopter gunships. And what is the result? At least 350 Lebanese killed (probably many more still in the rubble), and the best estimate is a dozen or so are Hizbollah. Fully a third are children according to the UN. 95% (95%!!) are civilians. And, I repeat, that is the result of using precision weaponry.
Any thought that Israel isn’t deliberately harming “innocent Lebanese” in the face of these statistics is simply delusional, nothing more.
I’ll stick with Isreal. You’re welcome to Hezbollah,if you want them.
