the ironic thing about these would-be,
current day walter lippmans is that
lippman went well beyond recycling conventional wisdom (1) and lippman,
when faced with the foremost issue of
his time (america’s ongoing involvement in vietnam) faced down the
most powerful man in the world (lbj) and lost his column, access and career
speaking truth to power(2).
try, with a straight face, to imagine
broder or friedman doing this.

I didn’t realize that about the end of Lippman’s
career — I thought that he went out successfully
and on his own terms.

i rechecked it- johnson sicced the dogs
on him and much of washington snubbed him and he quit his column about a year after it started- but you’re right- he left on his own.
nevertheless, he paid a heavy price (great book btw ronald steel “walter
lippmann and the american century)
