“Do, or do not. There is no ‘try.’” - Jedi Master Yoda
Such classic Arlen Specter:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A leading Republican senator on Monday said he will fight to give detainees the right to challenge their imprisonment, creating a new potential obstacle for legislation President George W. Bush wants in order to try terrorism suspects.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter said he would join Democrats working to amend a bill setting up trial procedures for foreign terrorism suspects that Republican leaders are trying to push through Congress this week.
As it now stands, the bill, which the White House was forced to negotiate with a group of Senate Republicans, would bar inmates held at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, from using habeas corpus petitions to challenge the legality of their detentions.
“I believe it is unconstitutional to take away habeas corpus,” Specter of Pennsylvania told reporters after a hearing with a panel of experts who were divided on the issue.
“I think if it goes back to the Supreme Court, the Supreme Court will teach Congress another lesson which they do with some frequency,” Specter said.
Habeas corpus — the phrase in Latin for “you have the body” — has been a centerpiece of Anglo-American jurisprudence since it was first developed over 300 years ago in Britain. It gave defendants the right to have their imprisonment reviewed by a court.
While Specter said he would try to amend the bill, he said he would not use procedural tools to block it and he would decide later how he would vote on it.
Got that? He believes it’s wrong. He believes it’s unconstitutional. But he won’t try to block it, and he doesn’t know how he’ll vote on it.
Arlen Specter, weasel.

Every single fucking time. Specter’s political survival, election after election, is a perfect illustration of the gullibility of the American voter — as well as the perfidy of the “press” which is supposed to disseminate information about candidates.
The general rule now is that nothing substantive that a candidate actually does while in office is to be mentioned during an election campaign. That would be so rude, so tasteless, so inappropriate.
So whatta think the over/under is on how long we get a compromise bill ala Warner/McCain/Grahamn. It seems to be the season where Republicans in Congress make beleive they are standing up to Bush only to prove they are all bark and no bite.
Specter is one of the treasonous elite who have deep knowledge and blackmailing power. Forget not his cover-up of the facts in the JFK murder case. Further, he is amongst the company of men and women who privately applauded said murder when it occurred..for purely political reasons. They are a miserable bunch who hate the true meaning of the American way of life and our constitution.
Through the years when thinking about the “moderate” Arlen Spector, I never forget he was the author of the “magic bullet theory” surrounding the murder of John Kennedy. Anyone who could pen such a treasonist doctrine should never ever be trusted.
American News media are Corporate owned. All American Corporations, oil, gas, News, Medicine, and more are joined at the head by Insurance Companies.
Insurance companies are ‘mutual’ which means they are owned and controled by policy holders and the major policy holders are “corporations”.
And Insurance companies own stock in those self same corporations.
And all this time I thought that a “daisy chain” was a manner of hooking a firewire device into a PC or else a sex activity. Now I find out it’s a way to describe the interconnectedness of large corporations. The sex allegory is probably more accurate here!
