No Filibuster
Sep 28th, 2006 at 4:14 pm by Susie
Just got this from one of the staffers in Reid’s office:
We entered into a unanimous consent agreement — the choice was have a cloture vote and lose (we simply did not have the votes) with no amendments allowed or actually get votes on four dem amendments. Because it was a UC agreement any member could have objected.

Harry Reid can go to hell.
Fuck him. I hope he gets tortured and raped.
Fucking shithead.
I DARE any of these scumbags to show up at DL. I DARE them, because I am ready to put my foot so far up someone’s ass their breath will taste like Adidas for a week.
He says that they didn’t have the votes to prevent cloture?
OK…I’d like to know who those 4 Democrats are. Now we’ll never know.
Time for new Democrats, I think.
Vichy Dems, redux. The Democratic Party is finished.
I just pitched the project to Josh Marshall: let’s ferret out the Dems who wouldn’t support the filibuster.
This has to go to conference committee first to get reconciled with the house version first? Is there a chance to stop the bill after it comes out of conference?
If the no votes on this bill are enough to sustain a filibuster Harry Reid’s next official act as Minority Leader should be to resign! An I’m sure when you the list of senators that voted no we’ll all be able to pick out the weasels!
Landrieu and Nelson are two of them.
(dailykos).
Landrieu is dead to me. She also cracked down on abortion rights in LA: she is a DINO, and supports this president often.
Reid must resign. I called the DNC and had them remove me from their mailign list. I told them I expected a call from someone higher up so I could explain why i’m leaving and told them no more GOTV, no more material support, andno more financial support.
Did the same with Boxer’s PAC for Change.
This is an institutional failure on the part of the Democrats. They played their cards poorly.
If I wanted to waste my money, i’d flush it down the toilet.
Stop me if I’m wrong, but this means that Reid is giving up the filibuster so that the Democrats can propose 4 amendments, all of which will be voted down on a party-line vote, instead?
That’s contemptuously stupid even for the Democrats.
All good points, and yes the Dems in th senate have proven themselves craven and spineless. (they could have even shared the spine .. they only needed enough 41 folks).
Regardless of any of that we all need to hold our noses and get out and vote in the Dems. It is important to remember this whole show (and it is a show) is being stage managed by Dark Lord Rove.
This whole deal is a potential win-win-win for BushCo. (Another trifecta).
One - they get to use a no vote in ads and attack Dems as being weak on terrah.
Two - Dubyer gets have him his torture and secret detentions. And dress up in some second hand stuff Poppy Bush picked up from Pinochet.
Three - The motivated, passionate liberals who might actually get out and fight these bastards at the ballot box will be so disheartened that they’ll all stay at home.
We can’t do anything about the first two, but we have control over the third. Don’t do anything to make the Repug’s path to Nov 7 easier. Don’t give them a god damn inch!
Some smart, passionate and quick on the feet leadership from the Dems could have difused this but that’s not what we have. Obviously.
There may be nothing to vote FOR with the invertebrates who currently have (D-XX) behind their names, but this damn sure somehting to vote AGAINST in the brownshirts running against them.
[sigh]
I won’t repeat the comment I made when the House version passed but I hope the next time the Democratic Senators who voted for this bill are up for re-election, they lose.
Everyone who voted for this be should be voted out. Jailed for their complecancy in war crimes and attack apone the consitution and water boarded just for good measure. What a nightmare this goverment has become. I personally am joining the national strike on Oct. 5th. I toke a Vacation day. Call in sick , disapper after lunch . We need to do something as a population. More then talking and blogging.
Of Torture, Bankruptcy, and Spineless Vichy Democrats
As everyone is painfully aware, the torture bill passed the senate yesterday evening by a comfortable margin. The handwriting had been on the wall for a couple of days. As the debate wore on, it…
