Weldon should step up and take some if not most of the blame. But he won’t since every political consultant would argue against it. Plus he most likely really believes that he did nothing wrong no matter how misguided that thought might be.

But the timing of the leak about the investigation which really forced the FBI raids of the other day is a valid question. Saying why would the republican led justice department leak it is a bit of a smoke screen. Yes the politically appointed leadership is solidly republican. But what is the political affiliation of the mid-level career civil service below that level who would be doing the grunt work on the case? There I would say at best it would look like the country with an about even split in political affiliation. Thus there would be enough with democratic leanings who if wanting to move up might attempt to curry favor with the party and leak this at this time.

All I’m saying is it’s plausable but does not take away from the fact that Weldon looks dirty as hell and should step up and take blame.
