The American Game

Baseball as assimilation.
Lots of problems with baseball these days. Kids are playing soccer or basketball instead - after all, the equipment’s a lot cheaper. Maybe that’s why inner-city kids are turning away in droves.
But damn, is there any sound like the crack of a bat hitting a ball on a summer night? To me, that’s America.

As long as the bat isn’t made of aluminium you are right it is the best, most American sound in the world. (As the sound of “leather on willow” is quintessentially English.)
You know Jacques Barzun’s famous baseball quote from a 1954 book? “”Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball.”
Here’s a nice essay about it.
I think the Rabbi in Newsweek has it right, too: baseball’s better on the radio (for one thing, Buck and McCarver aren’t on radio).
Well, Susan, how about the crack of a bat hitting a ball on Halloween?
Because that’s what it looks like we’re in for…
Ah, I’ll never forget going to Yankee games with my dad when I was a kid, and sleeping through about half of each game.
I never did feel very connected with American culture.
