Civil unions for all. The government should stay out of the church-sanctioned marriage business.

A read a great Michael Berube post recounting his fun playing music at a wedding reception with some old friends. They ended the night on a wild, highly improvised version of ‘Celebrate’ and when the final notes faded away, the guitarist jumped up to the mic and announced,”By the power vested in me by Kool and the Gang, I pronounce you man and wife!”
Not that it has anything to do with gay marriage, but it’s fun all the same.
Marriage is essentially a civil contract defined by each state that gennrally provides the responsibilities in case of children and the division of property through dissolution the contract or the death on one of the signers.
All the rest of the mumbo jumbo about marriage has been created by the various religions.
Rather that fight the battle over whether two persons of the same sex can obtain such a contract, a saner approach would be to take away the supurflous illusion that a religious Illuminary has theauthority to legitimize a civil contract.
This might also show the potential Theocrats that the Founders were much more worried about what the State might do to Religion, than the other way around.
