Honolulu motorcycle police officer Steve Favela died yesterday, five days after he was critically injured while escorting President Bush’s motorcade.
He died at 9:55 a.m. with relatives at his bedside at the Queen’s Medical Center, according to the Department of the Medical Examiner.
Favela was 30 years old and had been with the department for eight years. He and his wife had four young children.

This has understandably been at the top of the local newscasts for a week. The strangest aspect of it may be the call for blood donations, because he had a “rare” blood type. The claim of rarity was repeated all week; donations to the local Blood Bank skyrocketed.
Fine, except that his type was O-positive, which IIRC is the most common type of all.
It has something to do with O type blood being the universal donor, which means they run short all the time. I know, because I’m O-.
