NY Times: If you want to save energy, improving your gas mileage is a bigger bang for the buck than changing light bulbs. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

The Democrats are flexing their collective muscle:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A disputed election result in a U.S. House of Representatives race in Florida will be one of the first items raised when the Democratic-controlled House convenes next week, injecting partisan politics into the start of the 110th Congress.
Rep. Rush Holt, a New Jersey Democrat who has […]

So we killed someone to make sure everyone knows killing people is wrong. Not only did we kill him, we killed him after putting him in power and making sure we gave him enough weapons and chemicals with which to kill people.
For some reason, we don’t feel compelled to kill every dictator who kills his […]

My hosting company claims I crashed their server. This is their response to the latest trouble ticket my tech guy put in:
This issue is NOT related to your bandwidth allowance. The problem here is caused by one or more PHP scripts being simultaneously accessed on your site. On several occasions (particularly last night) these accesses […]

I understand Nixon’s crimes played a significant role, too.
Really, save your pardon outrage. I have a feeling you’re going to need it in about 752 days.

Well, kids, it’s the end of the year, and I have some news.
I’m starting a new job Tuesday, one that really excites me. I’ve known about it for a few days, and I’ve been running around tying up loose ends and getting my wardrobe together before I start. Now it’s time to tell you all […]

Chicago Dyke rethinks the strategy that says Democrats can win without the South:
According to an analysis by Polidata, a political data consulting firm, seven states are all but certain to lose at least one seat: Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Another six states are all but certain to gain at least […]

It’s just that the FDA is always telling us things are safe - when they’re not. So I’ll just reserve judgment on this one for a decade or so…

Riverbend:
Here we come to the end of 2006 and I am sad. Not simply sad for the state of the country, but for the state of our humanity, as Iraqis. We’ve all lost some of the compassion and civility that I felt made us special four years ago. I take myself as an example. Nearly […]

Roll Call:
We are impressed and encouraged that incoming Democratic Senate and House leaders have served notice that legislating will be a full-time job for Members of Congress beginning next year, not just an activity undertaken as a break from campaigning.

There are already far too many people whose lives were cut short by this immoral, pointless war, but this particular young man grew up near me when I lived in the Hellmouth. In the fall, the sounds of his high school’s football games (the roar of the crowd, the booming P.A. system) echoed across the […]

Boy, when you think of the heat Clinton took over the Marc Rich pardon… Turns out Ford pardoned Nixon because they were such close friends - something he neglected to share with the rest of us. Such a nice man:
“I looked upon him as my personal friend. And I always treasured our relationship. And I […]

Richard Thompson is one of those people to whose concerts I’ve dragged a few people who insisted they wouldn’t like “somebody like that.” To which I always replied, “Like what? He plays everything.”

I was up by Willow Grove Air Force Base yesterday and I saw three separate C-130s take off in the space of about 15 minutes. I wondered if they were headed to the Middle East - we saw a lot of activity from there right before we started bombing Iraq back in 2002.

Retirement prospects for middle-aged women look even worse than for men. The good news is, I think you’ll see a national movement toward communal housing that will benefit everyone:
“That’s the amazing thing about it,” said Heidi Hartmann, president of the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, a think tank that studies issues about women and families. […]

Let’s see them try to spin this as just another weather variation:
An ancient ice shelf has cracked off northern Ellesmere Island, creating an enormous 66-square-kilometre ice island and leaving a trail of icy blocks in its wake. “It really is incredible,” said Warwick Vincent of Universite Laval, one of the few people to have laid […]

HOUSTON (MarketWatch) — Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSA) Wednesday said it hired [former Interior Secretary] Gale Norton to serve as a counsel for the oil giant.
The move comes amid rising scrutiny on Capitol Hill of Norton’s former agency’s dealings with the oil industry.
