My bullshit detector is telling me I’ll regret posting this, but Steve Clemons is a respected reporter with good sources and people with bullshit detectors far more seasoned than my own are posting it, so it’s worth getting out there for those of you may have missed it. Have a look.
Did the President Declare “Secret War” Against Syria and Iran?
Washington intelligence, military and foreign policy circles are abuzz today with speculation that the President, yesterday or in recent days, sent a secret Executive Order to the Secretary of Defense and to the Director of the CIA to launch military operations against Syria and Iran.
The President may have started a new secret, informal war against Syria and Iran without the consent of Congress or any broad discussion with the country.
The bare outlines of that order may have appeared in President Bush’s Address to the Nation last night outlining his new course on Iraq
Now where have I heard this story before? You know, the one about the paranoid and secretive president launching secret wars. A movie? A TV show? Hmm. It’ll come to me eventually.

Obviously, if this is true, we stand on the precipice of an unmitigated disaster, which is odd because we were already in the midst of an unmitigated disaster. But, as Josh Marshall was kind enough to point out way back in 2003, disaster is not a bug or even a mere feature of George Bush’s Middle East policy, it’s the plan.

there were also those mysterious explosions in south-western iran this morning.
Dubya is obviously batshit crazy.
I think impeachment may be on the horizon.
Well we did attack an Iranian consolite. And take 5-6 people. Northern Iraq.
I don’t really see the subtle surprise of sneakily starting war. Even the present Iraq war (is it still a war or just a monumental fuck-up disaster now?) began long before the 2003 invasion. No fly zones, periodic bombing (no matter how selective) and embargoes spell war. It’s not just when the casualties come home in boxes that it becomes war.
Secret? Nah. It seemed clear to me that Syria and Iran were next on his hit parade.
Did you notice, Lieberman was the only member of the Senate menitioned in his speech?
