Dear Atrios

I suspect that you really don’t enjoy giving out the Wanker of the Day awards. It’s bad enough just reading some of their stuff, let alone aerating it. But due to the glut of wankerish reporting by the supposed elite of the news and opinion media, you may want to consider that your award is actually an incentive to indulge in wankerism. For many of these writers, the name recognition you provide is probably greater than what their actually publications provide them. Jay Carney? Isn’t he the son of Norton of the Honeymooners? Brendan Nyhan? Doesn’t he sing those ingratiating ballads on college radio? David Ignatius? Who really knows?
Just saying, these people may be living the life of “any press is good press” and your Wanker of the Day award may be the best press available to them. Not suggesting that you stop. Just saying that some of them probably really, really appreciate - and need - the attention.

I understand your instinct here, but I think that you’re (a) vastly overstating Atrios’ influence in the larger, non-bloggy world, and (b) vastly underestimating the capacity of people like Carney to churn out nonsense purely on their own initiative.
what michael plank says.
