All the news that’s fit to fabricate.
The drive by some political and military figures — and pundits — to paint those who oppose the war in Iraq as traitors or at least not supporting the troops has hit another low, with a Washington Times columnist trumpeting an incendiary quote from Abraham Lincoln shown to be a fabrication last year.
Frank Gaffney, Jr. opened his latest column with this: “Congressmen who willfully take actions during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are saboteurs and should be arrested, exiled, or hanged.” — President Abraham Lincoln.
He continues: “It is, of course, unimaginable that the penalties proposed by one of our most admired presidents for the crime of dividing America in the face of the enemy would be contemplated — let alone applied — today. Still, as the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate engage in interminable debate about resolutions whose effects can only be to ‘damage morale and undermine the military’ while emboldening our enemies, it is time to reflect on what constitutes inappropriate behavior in time of war.”
One problem: Lincoln never said it.
Reminds me of another hack masquerading as a journalist.
In July, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ran an editorial headlined “(Mis)Speaketh Al,” that included the “I didn’t live in this century” remark, as well as 10 other quotations which a Post-Gazette search of sources traced back to Quayle.
“I’ll stand by where we got the information from,” said Trib editorialist Colin McNickle, who both declined to give their origin and said he believed the quotations were accurate “as far as we can determine.”
That would include this remark attributed to Gore in the July 16 Trib: “I stand by all the misstatements that I have made.”
It was attributed to Quayle on Dec. 24, 1990, in the Louisville Courier Journal.
By why let facts intrude onto the opinion page, or into your worldview, right assholes?

Sloppy journalism or purposely skewed to reinforce a political argument.
Corporations are soulless, godless beasts who own their minions body and soul. The sole purpose of a corporation is to generate profits - at any human cost.
Are you surprised that they would lie? are you surprised that they would distort? Why would you be surprised that they slander in profits name?
If you could put spirit eyeglasses on you would see beasts like the Orchs in The Hobbit. They are mindless, soulless beasts who are products of hate and evil.
Are you surprised that they can stoop so low??
WHY?
Did I say I was surprised?

Agreed.
But this Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is not realistically
intended to make a profit. It is the plaything of
Richard Mellon Scaife, a super-rich archconservative
who founded and funds the paper with inherited money
as a pure propaganda organ.
Think of it as a non-Moonie Washington Times.
