‘You Are Not What You Think You Are’

See, this is what I predicted would happen when we started this godforsaken war - that not only would we needlessly put the lives of our troops on the line, but their sanity and their very souls.
I’m old enough to remember Vietnam, and what happened after. I remember all the homeless vets wandering the streets. It seemed like almost every week, you heard about another vet going off the deep end and killing someone.
I remember talking to guys I knew who served, and how they would occasionally let slip something that indicated they’d left part of their souls behind in Southeast Asia. You simply can’t put people into a position where it’s necessary that they do horrible things to survive that go against everything they were ever taught (at least until basic training) without a damned good reason.
This wasn’t it.
And you can’t expect that there won’t be serious consequences.

The flag I served stood for honor and decency–the best hopes of humanity. I’ll never forgive these bastards for having crapped on it.
