Dinnertime

See, I really didn’t want to go back to the coffeehouse tonight, but I did want the free internet. What to do?
I went to Chef Ken’s for dinner - which happens to be right next door to the coffeehouse. And unlike the coffeehouse, Chef Ken’s is air-conditioned. (Did I mention it was in the 80s today?) And guess what? I can still use the coffeehouse internet access - it works next door, too.
Chef Ken makes the most wonderful comfort food in the world, and he told me not to worry about being unemployed. “God closes one door, opens another. I really believe that,” he said. “So you’ll have unemployment. I should see a lot more of you now.”
No, I said. I wasn’t eligible for unemployment, and that made it very unlikely he’d see much of me. “I can’t afford it,” I said.
You know what? He told me any time I wanted to eat, come in and he’d run a tab. “You pay me back when you can,” he said.
Wasn’t that sweet? I knew I picked the right place to eat tonight.

Susie, Chef Ken is the lucky man.
There are still saints in the world. You found one.
What disqualified you for unemployment –
consultant status rather than employee,
or not enough time on the payroll to qualify?
Not enough time on the payroll.
