You're right about TB and HIV infection being a synergistically scary mix, but TB isn't rare--it's actually one of the "big three" communicable diseases, along with AIDS and malaria  (compare &lt;a href="http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs104/en/" rel="nofollow"&gt;1.577 million deaths from TB in 2005&lt;/a&gt;  with &lt;a href="http://www.who.int/hiv/mediacentre/news62/en/index.html/" rel="nofollow"&gt; 2.9 million AIDS deaths in 2006&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs104/en/" rel="nofollow"&gt; malaria, with more than a million deaths a year).&lt;/a&gt;  Even in the States, although TB incidence is declining, &lt;a href="http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5611a2.htm" rel="nofollow"&gt;the rate of decline is slowing.&lt;/a&gt;</description>
