The New York Times has a good piece on Joe Trippi and the Edwards campaign.
For a lot of reasons, it was a good strategic move for Edwards to bring on Trippi. He’s the only mainstream media consultant who really gets the internet, and it doesn’t hurt that reporters love him - really, really love him. (I’ve seen reporters who are otherwise tough turn to gushing groupies in his presence.)
But the main reason is, he knows in a race with two celebrity candidates sucking all the oxygen out of the room, the internet is Edwards’ best hope for a wedge. It’s not a bad thing that Clinton and Obama are riding high right now; what goes up must come down, and being the frontrunner isn’t the best place to be this early on.
Meanwhile, informed voters are savvy enough to bypass standard media coverage when choosing a candidate. Trippi’s smart to go directly to the voters on this one. How far it takes Edwards remains to be seen, but I wouldn’t count him out just yet.
