Groundhog day

Rep. Tom Price

We not only have to fight these bozos, we have to keep Obama from cutting a deal with them:

The new House Budget Committee chairman hinted Monday that he had big plans for Social Security reform in the next two years, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

A week after the House voted on a rule that critics say could force a manufactured crisis in the disability program in late 2016, a potential leverage point for Republicans aiming for changes, Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) told a conservative audience that he wanted his committee to tackle Social Security.

“What I’m hopeful is what the Budget Committee will be able do is to is begin to normalize the discussion and debate about Social Security. This is a program that right now on its current course will not be able to provide 75 or 80 percent of the benefits that individuals have paid into in a relatively short period of time,” he said at a Heritage Action for America event in Washington, D.C., according to AJC. “That’s not a responsible position to say, ‘You don’t need to do anything to do it.’”

Price, whose predecessor Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) never put forward major reform proposals in his otherwise ambitious budgets, offered means-testing and increasing the eligibility age as possibilities. He also hinted at privatizing Social Security.

  1. Tom Price is a liar who would like nothing more then to get rid of the Social Security Insurance system altogether. That makes him just like every other Republican in America. Including the dumb ones who get a check from Social Security every month and still vote for Republicans.
If any Democrat joins the Republicans in trying to do anything to Social Security except make to it stronger then they should be removed from office and drummed out of the Democratic Party.
Obama is a lost cause on this issue.

  2. Well, my big fear is that Democrat in the WH wil decide to work with the Repubs on this. He has has said outright he wants to change SocSec, and now he doesn’t have to fight a Dem majority in the Senate.

    Uh oh.

  3. Obama IS a lost cause on this. He just signed a budget bill that has effectively raised the full retirement age for multi-employer retirement plan retirees to 80. Read and weep:

As he says whenever anybody asks him about what’s to be done with the Post Office, we’ll do the same thing we did with GM, once we have a manufactured crisis in SS, he will say, we’ll do the same thing we did with the pensions. Mark my words. He’s a snake.

One of his spokes persons commenting on that budget bill said the President is finally getting the compromise he’s been waiting for for three years, which means, both houses of congress now Republican. And just to piss off all you people who voted for him, you voted for a Rockefeller Republican! We beat Bush back, but are we really gonna work as hard at beating back the guy you voted for? WKJM e.g.

  4. We should worry more about beating Hillary back who is a Goldwater Republican. Obama is staring at a pissed off Left, two Republican houses of congress and Republicans all over the country who would rather he quit and go back to Kenya. Obama is already in checkmate.

  5. Let’s be clear the politics of Social Security cuts are still poisonous. The Republicans cannot go there without Democratic cover. Lame Duck Obama is not good enough. If he were to cut a deal and then Democrats in the House and Senate bolted, the Republicans would panic as soon as they saw the tally come up and vote the compromise down to protect themselves and their Presidential field. Hillary could kill this issue in one sentence and gain cover from the carping left. Her silence on this subject is the more ominous thing out there at the moment.

  6. Hillary can gain cover from the carping Left if she does one simple thing. Announce that she’s not running for president. Short of that the Left intends to skin her alive.
