Why Can’t We Have A Better Media?

And why oh why can’t we ever have a serious debate on public policy in this country by anything other than bumper-sticker slogans?
In spite of knowing her ideas probably won’t get the open debate they deserve in America’s major media, I’m really looking forward to cracking open Naomi Klein’s “The Shock Doctrine” this weekend.

Easy answer - Bread and Circuses.
This was the method that the ruling class of ancient Rome used to maintain their power and control of the people. They kept the sheep fat and preoccupied, even as they fleeced them and sent them off to one war after another. Just like today (enter O.J.). And the people who brought the bread and circuses to the Coliseum, the media of their day, were doubtless mere functionaries and very well taken care of, thank you. Just like today (Couric earns a reported $15 million a year). To point out that the Emperor had no clothes was a career-ending move, never even contemplated.
As we see demonstrated that the Democrats are just Republicans with a huge dollop of cowardice thrown in, and try to maneuver them into taking some minimal action or other, Henry David Thoreau’s statement jumps immediately to mind: “There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root.”
