Interesting point: but let’s remember that the German Army actually engineered the terms of its own defeat, when that was in fact inevitable, in such a way as to be able to blame the civilian leadership of the new republic. Whereas our current civilian leadership appears to be determined to fight to the last drop of somebody else’s kids’ blood.
And it was the Social Democrats, such as Noske, who unleashed the Freikorps on the communists. I can’t see the analogy going that far this time around either.
But this stab in the back virus has been with us for a long time–just think back to that MIA/POW folklore about the hundreds or thousands of supposed prisoners held by the Vietnamese somewhere out of sight. Those who couldn’t admit we lost a war we deserved to lose found a myth to convince them that the war was somehow still not over. It’s going to come back with a vengeance this time in that 27% that will always believe it was a glorious mission.
