Veto Power

But really, it’s more like powerlessness:
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush, who didn’t veto a bill for nearly six years, is now embracing the power to constrain the Democratic-controlled Congress even as his popularity remains low.
The strategy has blocked Congress from forcing troop drawdowns in Iraq and given Bush substantial leverage on children’s health policies, federal spending and other issues.
But some say it carries a political risk. By thwarting congressional efforts to wind down the war and redirect spending to popular domestic programs, Bush could help Democrats portray Republicans as out of step with voters in the 2008 elections.
“The president’s stubbornness is like an anchor around the Republican Party,” said Rep. Al Wynn, D-Md.

How is it going to help the democrats when congress’s approval rating is a half to a third of the Presidents?
Unfortunately, the stubbornness of Mr. Bush is also connected to the ENTIRE FREAKIN’ COUNTRY!!
Yeah, well, ppl are unhappy with congress only because they’re not delivering the hearty dope-slap that is so richly deserved.
And good, let Bush be the anchor hung around the neck of the GOP, dragging them all down to Davy Jones.
I really appreciated the “glub, glub, glub” from Santorum last year, as the water closed over his sanctimonious head.
Its all about the raise in cigarette taxes. Bush cannot allow a tax increase. It is key to his three goals to being a successful president and surpassing his father.
the three goals are:
1) tax cut (Poppy said, “Read my lips, no new taxes”, violated his promise and lost.) taxes cuts must be retained at all cost and beyond all reason.
2) get rid of Saddaam Housein. (poppy failed to finish the war. GWB will finish it.)
3) get re-elected.
bush has to veto the CHIPs bill to retain his goal of no new taxes.
after that, all he has to do is stay in Iraq until inauguration day in 2009, which he clearly is going to be allowed to do.
people should not wonder at all how GWB can be happy with his presidency and think he has been successful. in his own mind he HAS been successful.
